UNBC Energy Transition Tour: Exploring Sustainability

Date: Saturday, September 28th, 2024
Time: 9:45 AM – 5:10 PM

The UNBC Energy Transition Group hosted a guided tour showcasing innovative energy solutions in Prince George. This day-long event provided participants with an opportunity to explore practical applications of renewable energy technologies, such as wind turbines, solar panels, heat pump systems, and advanced energy-efficient buildings.

By using electric vehicles (EVs) for transportation, the event not only highlighted the feasibility of sustainable commuting but also set an example of carbon-conscious event planning. Participants included students, community members, and energy professionals.

Wind Turbine

Wind Turbine Generation System

Host: David Buchan

Participants explored a 4,000-watt wind turbine system. This site demonstrated the role of wind energy in reducing dependency on non-renewable power sources.

Sustainable Solar Yacht

Open Waters Solar

Host: Simon and Matthew

A visit to a solar panel production facility specializing in durable panels for yachts and transport trucks. The tour highlighted their recent $450M expansion and its anticipated impact on local employment and green energy adoption.

UNBC Wood Innovation Research Lab

UNBC Airtight Passive Wood Innovation Research Laboratory

Host: David Claus

Tour of a Passive House-certified research lab, demonstrating the potential of airtight construction in reducing energy loss. The building withstood a nearby explosion, reinforcing its design's resilience.

Passive House

Passive House with Heat Pump System

Host: David Claus

A residential example of sustainable living, featuring a ductless heat pump system and high-efficiency boilers suitable for extreme temperatures.

Heat Pump

Grid-Tied Solar System and Central Heat Pump Systems

Hosts: Shannon Carson, Al Wiensczyk, Shelley Ruiz, and others

Insights into the implementation of grid-tied solar systems and dual-fuel heat pumps. Discussions covered technical and financial aspects, including the use of rebates for installation.
