UNBC Joins Campus Race to Zero Waste!
At the University of Northern British Columbia, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. This year, we’re excited to announce our participation in Campus Race to Zero Waste for the very first time! This eight-week competition (from February to March) unites colleges and universities across North America to inspire innovative waste reduction and recycling efforts, and we’re excited to take on the challenge.
Why This Matters
As Canada’s Green University™, UNBC is committed to environmental stewardship and demonstrating sustainable practices in our community. By joining the Campus Race to Zero Waste, we are taking another step toward reducing our environmental footprint by engaging students and tracking data on our waste usage.
This competition is an opportunity to:
- Collect Data: How can we reach our goals if they can't be measured? Well being a part of this program will ensure that we can report on our progress towards a Zero-Waste campus.
- Raise Awareness and Drive Engagement: Educate the campus community about the importance of waste reduction, recycling, and composting. Encourage everyone to take an active role in making our campus more sustainable.
- Benchmark Progress: Measure our efforts against other institutions and showcase the innovative solutions UNBC is bringing to waste management.
How You Can Get Involved
- Recycle Right: Use the clearly marked bins across campus for paper, containers, flexible plastic, and more.
- Reduce Waste: Bring reusable bottles, mugs, and bags to cut down on single-use items.
- Spread the Word: Encourage your peers to join the effort and make waste reduction a collective mission.
- Participate in Events: Watch for events and activities on campus where you can learn, contribute, and have fun!
Our Goal
As a first-time participant, we’re focused on learning, building momentum, and setting a strong foundation for future competitions. With your help, we aim to:
- Divert as much waste as possible from landfills.
- Increase awareness about waste reduction across the campus.
- Support a Zero-Waste culture that will last beyond the competition.
