Making nature accessible for everyone
British Columbia is home to spectacular outdoor recreational spaces, but not all of them are accessible to everyone. School of Planning and Sustainability Associate Professor Dr. Mark Groulx, Spinal Cord Injury BC, and a team of researchers are exploring ways to change that so everyone can enjoy the benefits of spending time in the natural world.
Water security in southern Asia
Accelerating glacier melt and the loss of mountain snowpack will have a significant impact on water security for people in the Himalaya-Karakoram in southern Asia. Geography Assistant Professor Dr. Joseph Shea co-authored a new paper in the journal Science examining which populations will be impacted and how different river basins will be affected.
Exploring the destruction tradition of Monte Cassino
Monte Cassino, the first house of the Benedictine Order of Catholic priests, has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries. Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences and Humanities Dr. Kriston Rennie traces that tumultuous history as he explores the abbey as a cultural product.
Off to Oxford
Aaron Larsen's interest in witch trials was piqued during an undergraduate history class at UNBC. A three-time UNBC graduate, Larsen will soon begin his doctoral studies examining witch trials in Switzerland at the University of Oxford.
UNBC recognizes three distinguished Professors Emeriti
Dr. Henry Harder (Health Sciences), Dr. Ross Hoffman (First Nations Studies) and Dr. Hugues Massicotte (Ecosystem Science and Management) have all been granted the title Professor Emeritus.
UNBC, Hakai Institute supercomputer measures global glacier change
An international team of researchers used a supercomputer jointly funded by UNBC and the Hakai Institute to create digital elevation models demonstrating that the rate of mass loss from Earth's glaciers is accelerating. UNBC Geography Professor, Hakai affiliate and Canada Research Chair in Glacier Change Dr. Brian Menounos co-authored the study published today in the journal Nature.
Bats' unexpected discovery leads to research opportunity
A chance encounter with small brown bats by Candyce Huxter on Halloween Day in 2019 led to the third-year UNBC biology student's first peer-reviewed publication.
Joint effort saves moose, keeps airport safe
When a camera installed by UNBC researcher Dr. Roy Rea discovered a moose on the Prince George airport property, it launched a collaboration between the Prince George Airport Authority and the University to save the animal while keeping airport operations safe.
From UNBC to the Ivy League
Inspired by her undergraduate research experience at UNBC, Dr. Kirsten Reimer recently completed her PhD at Yale, where she studied how our cells make and edit ribonucleic acid (RNA).
