The Arctic and Northern Challenge program aims to address pressing issues impacting the quality of life of Northern peoples. The program is committed to prioritizing Northern-led research projects that have a strong focus on Northern capacity building. By providing both research funding and scientific expertise, the program will support strong and sustainable Northern communities through applied technology and innovation.

This call is for proposals in support of research connected to 4 key themes: housing, health, food and water for Arctic and Northern peoples and communities. Research projects selected under this call will use technology and innovation to solve pressing issues identified by those living in the north and Arctic. All project teams will partner and develop their research proposal with National Research Council (NRC) research collaborators to achieve their objectives and outcomes.

Funding is up to $150,000 per project annually for up to 3 years. It is expected the majority of research projects will take place within the Arctic and Northern lands and territories including Inuit Nunangat, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. If research will be conducted outside these areas, you must demonstrate the direct relevance to Arctic and Northern peoples.

All applications should be led by a principal investigator (PI) from Northern Canada. The PI should be:

  • an Arctic or Northern Indigenous person, government, organization or community, or
  • a representative from an Arctic or Northern organization, government or community

If the above criteria cannot be met, the project must include:

  • a funded partner (co-investigator) who is an Arctic or Northern Indigenous person, government, organization or community, or

The Interior Universities Research Coalition (IURC) and the BC Ministry of Health (Ministry) have established a BC Interior Region Seed Grant Research Fund, through the Ministry’s Research Seed Grant Program. This fund aims to encourage inter- institutional research, in health-related areas, between researchers at Thompson Rivers University, the University of Northern British Columbia, and the University of British Columbia (Okanagan) and foster collaboration with Ministry on research-related program areas.

Full-time faculty with ongoing or tenure-track appointments are eligible to apply. Those holding sessional or term appointments may contribute to and receive funding from an approved project, but they are not eligible to apply as Principal Applicants. Awarded projects will have a single administrative lead Principal Applicant who will be responsible for managing all aspects of the project.

Funding of $40,000 is available for one year, to be disbursed in either 1 or 2 projects that best address the Ministry of Health’s three research questions:

1. How do First Nations, Métis and Urban Indigenous partners who are in receipt of health, mental health, or social sector funding currently experience requests for progress and financial reporting, and how might health, mental health, and social sector funding agencies incorporate Indigenous-led reporting mechanisms to demonstrate program impact, reflect Indigenous worldviews, ease reporting burden on Indigenous communities and partners, and decolonize reporting processes?

2. Identify the challenges/barriers (negative impacts) and facilitators/enablers (positive impacts) that affect (1) post-secondary institution enrollment into health career programs (including career laddering programs), (2) program completion, and/or (3) health workforce attrition within the first five years of employment post-graduation for Indigenous Peoples in British Columbia.

3. To what extent do Employed Student Nurse (ESN) Programs across BC’s Health Authorities optimize opportunities for student nurses to work in health care, and how can they be improved to support practice readiness and enhance intentional recruitment and retention?

All eligible EOIs received by the above-noted deadline will then be provided to a member of the Ministry’s Research and Technology Branch, who will arrange meetings with each EOI proponent and the Ministry program area who submitted the research question. Meetings will be held in early December through mid-January, to discuss the proponent’s EOI in advance of preparation of a full proposal.

Research on Research is a joint initiative of SSHRC, CIHR, and Michael Smith Health Research BC. Research on research, also known as metaresearch, is the application of rigorous methods and analysis to the practice of research itself—its methods, standards and evaluation. This joint initiative aims to:

  • build knowledge and understanding on metaresearch, i.e., the application of rigorous methods and analysis to the practice of research itself—its methods, incentives, standards and evaluation—and the practices of how that research is funded, communicated, applied and evaluated
  • produce data on metaresearch that may have impacts on research and innovation policy and funding practices in Canada and other jurisdictions
  • take part in knowledge mobilization among Canadian and international researchers, including members of RoRI’s consortium, to contribute to the development of research and innovation policies and research funding practices;
  • provide training for students and highly qualified personnel
  • build collaborations among researchers working on metaresearch, both in Canada and internationally

Horizon Europe is the European Union’s key funding program for research and innovation.

In November 2023, the Government of Canada closed substantive negotiations with the European Commission (EC) to increase collaboration under Horizon Europe, the world's largest research and innovation program involving countries around the globe. Now applications from Canadian researchers and innovators will be reviewed as fully-fledged members of consortia in Horizon Europe Pillar 2 calls. While Canadians can participate in all Horizon Europe calls that are open to international partners, as an associated country, Canadians can access a broader range of research opportunities in Pillar 2.  Most Horizon Europe Pillar 2 projects require at least three partners from three different EU member states or associated countries.

Each programme within Horizon Europe launches project calls based on a pre-established work programme under each thematic area. See the below funding description for a link to a list of funding opportunities and deadlines.

The Pacific Salmon Foundation makes grants to organizations that undertake Pacific salmon conservation and restoration or science and research. Sometimes, when necessary, the Foundation will actually spearhead and execute a specific project. These are typically larger-scale, strategically-critical projects that would otherwise not be undertaken without the Foundation’s involvement. The Foundation partners with government agencies, other non-profits, businesses and volunteers to make Partnered Initiatives successful. Partnered Initiatives are subject to the same level of technical review required of applicants to the Foundation’s Community Salmon Program, though there is more flexibility in terms of match and volunteer requirements.
