Establishing a Comprehensive Framework
The primary goal of Theme 3 during this phase is to establish a robust framework for investigating the responses of fish to environmental changes within the Nechako Watershed. This framework integrates cutting-edge techniques, such as acoustic telemetry for burbot in Fraser Lake and radio telemetry for white sturgeon in the Nechako River, with the analysis of historical data sets of key fish species like sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, and rainbow trout. By combining real-time data with retrospective analyses, Theme 3 aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how these fish populations respond to varying temperature and flow conditions.
Specific Objectives and Community Engagement
The theme utilizes an extensive network of acoustic telemetry receivers to investigate the spatio-temporal distribution and oxy-thermal habitat use of burbot in Fraser Lake. Concurrently, radio telemetry is employed in collaboration with the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative Technical Working Group to study thermal habitat use and selection by white sturgeon in the Nechako River mainstem. Additionally, Theme 3 conducts a thorough analysis of historical datasets to understand long-term responses of fish populations, including abundance and spawning success, to temperature variations in the Nechako Watershed. Importantly, these activities create valuable opportunities for engagement with local First Nations, communities, and stakeholders, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. All data collected are stored in a centralized database accessible to First Nations, researchers, and other stakeholders, ensuring transparency and facilitating informed decision-making for the conservation and management of Nechako's fish species.
