Library Acquisitions
Hudson's Bay Company Archives
In the fall of 2008, the UNBC library acquired copies of 149 microfilm reels of documents from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives (http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/index.html). These include all of the documents generated by the company in British Columbia, beginning around 1820. They also include journals from the Alberta portion of the Peace River country, Fort Edmonton, and many posts in Canada's arctic. These documents give undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty members, and members of the surrounding community easy access to rich documents that shed light on many aspects of history, most notably aboriginal history, environmental history, fur trade history, and economic history. An indication of the value of these documents can be found in the fact that in 2007, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) added the Hudson's Bay Company Archives' records to its "Memory of the World" registry. Combined with microfilmed copies of records from the Department of Indian Affairs and the Church Missionary Society (already in the UNBC library), these documents will help support a wide range of research projects in the years to come.
