Unofficial Transcripts

What is an unofficial transcript?

Unofficial transcripts are transcripts that an applicant has opened, obtained electronically, or has had access to.  For the purpose of the UNBC online application, applicants are required to upload unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended to their application so they can be used for evaluation.

Requirements for including transcripts with your application

  • Include unofficial transcripts from EVERY post-secondary institution you have attended (college or university level) regardless of how many courses you may have taken or if you finished a degree. Secondary school (high school) transcripts are not required.
  • Scan the front AND back of each unofficial transcript page. Ensure your transcript scan includes a grading scale if you have one. Failure to scan the back of the transcript will result in delays in processing your application.
  • UNBC students must upload a copy of their unofficial transcript at the time of admission application. To obtain a copy of your unofficial UNBC transcript, please log into your myUNBC Student Account. Click on Student Records and select Unofficial Transcript. You can then print this to a PDF document.
  • Official transcripts are not required unless you are admitted (by mail or email from the issuing institution).

Special note for students who have completed an exchange during their studies

For students who completed an exchange program through their home institution, you will need to supply a transcript for each post-secondary institution, including exchange institutions. In most cases, when an exchange is noted on a home institutions transcript, the individual grades received at the exchange institution may not show. (i.e.: If you finished your Bachelor's degree at the University of Victoria (UVIC), but during your studies at UVIC you attended the University of Tromso in Norway for an international exchange, you would need to supply both a transcript from UVIC and one from the University of Tromso as part of your application to graduate programs at UNBC).

Official Transcripts

What is an official transcript?

Official transcripts are transcripts that an applicant orders from their post-secondary institution to be sent directly to UNBC (at the contact below). In some cases, an applicant will obtain their official transcript from their institution in a sealed envelope or can be emailed directly from an institutional email address to graduate-admissions@unbc.ca. Provided the transcript envelope remains unopened, applicants can mail that as well. Documents submitted in support of an application become the property of the University of Northern British Columbia and will not subsequently be released.

In rare instances, an institution may provide only one official copy of a transcript. In these instances, you will be required to bring your only copy to the Office of the Registrar so we can take a certified true copy. Please contact graduate-admissions@unbc.ca if you have questions related to this.

Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions are required, no matter how long it has been since you attended and even if the coursework was not completed or a degree was not awarded. Failure to do so may result in your admission being denied, an admission offer rescinded, or being required to withdraw from a graduate program. Exchange students: please see our special note on students who have completed exchange agreements above as official transcripts will also be required for both institutions on admission.

Official transcripts can be emailed directly from an institutional email address to graduate-admissions@unbc.ca or by mail to:
