2017 Northern Medical Program Graduate - Lisa Flegel
Name: Lisa Flegel
Hometown: Bella Coola, BC
What attracted you to your field?
I love working with patients of all ages and building relationships with them. One of the reasons Dermatology appealed to me is that it allows for a diverse practice where you can provide continuity of care. I also really like that dermatology is an area of medicine where effective treatments can have a huge impact on a patient's health and quality of life. During a pediatric dermatology elective it was rewarding to see how several adolescents' confidence improved after treating their visible skin conditions.
In 10 years, what UBC or NMP moment will you still be talking about?
I loved being a part of our close-knit class of NMP students. Throughout the four years we frequently held potluck dinners. Not only is the NMP class full of smart and dedicated students, but is also host to some amateur gourmet chefs! At each potluck the food outdid the one before. It was always such a nice break from studying to get together, eat delicious food, laugh and relax.
What’s next for you?
I am very excited to be moving to Vancouver to complete my Dermatology residency at UBC!
As you look ahead, what (or who) inspires you?
One of the most rewarding aspects of medicine has been getting to know the patients and families that we are privileged to be involved with. Connecting with patients and hearing their stories inspires me to keep learning.
Name one thing on your bucket list.
I love the ocean and have snorkelled in several locations around the world and was amazed by the beauty below the surface. I would like to one day get my scuba diving certification so I can explore the ocean even more!
