Unknown Chemicals and Wastes

Unknown chemicals and wastes pose a serious health hazard and challenge to dispose of safely and legally.  All labs are responsible for accurate labeling of chemical containers, samples, and wastes.  If the contents of a container are unknown either due to poor labeling practices or damage, the program or principal investigator are responsible for the costs associated with identifying the material.  The cost for analysis is variable, depending on the complexity of the material and information provided with it.

To dispose of an unknown material or waste, complete an Unknown Chemical/Waste Processing Form along with an Unknown Chemical/Waste Analysis Charge Authorization Form to the Dispensing Chemist.  Depending on the nature of the waste and information provided, it may be left in place until analysis is complete.  If it appears safe, it will be moved to the hazardous waste storage area until it is identified and disposed of. Note: The cost of disposing of the material is still covered by the university.
