Laboratory Spill Kits

Each laboratory each required to maintain a spill kit.  The contents of the spill kit must be relevant to hazards and materials stored in the area.  For example, a lab that only utilizes growth media for microorganisms needs a biological spill kit (ie., bleach, mixing container, gloves, paper towels) whereas a lab where a wide variety of chemicals are used or stored will require a more complex spill kit (ie., gloves, goggles, waste containers, mercury spill materials, calcium gluconate, polyethylene glycol 300-400, etc.).  Spill kit maintenance is the responsibility of the laboratory supervisor, and the kit should be inspected every semester to ensure that the needed materials are available and have not degraded.

Floor-level Spill Kits

Floor-level emergency spill response kits are located on the third and fourth floors of the Teaching Laboratory; the second, third, and fourth floors of the Research Laboratory, and adjacent to the Northern Health Sciences Centre.  These spill kits are intended for clean up of hazardous spills and provide site-specific spill clean up materials.  Each lab in these locations has an access key for the kit and map to the location.  If these spill kits are accessed, Security must be contacted.
