The Timberwolves Athletics Drum Making and Gifting Program has been running since 2012 and is highlighted by the gifting of painted, handmade First Nations drums to graduating varsity athletes during the year-end athletic banquet. The drums are made each year by non-graduating varsity athletes as part of a cultural learning/awareness opportunity.
The drum making workshop is facilitated by the FNC and typically involves teachings from a local Elder as well as the FNC manager. All four varsity sports teams (men’s and women’s soccer and basketball) participate in the drum making and gifting program. For many varsity athletes, the receiving of the drum is a highlight moment of their UNBC athletics career.
