UNBC Partner in New 'Arctic Academy of Sustainability"
The University of Northern British Columbia is a partner in a new Arctic Academy for Sustainability, launched under the auspices of a Thematic Network of the UArctic with funding from the Prince Albert of Monaco II Foundation. The Academy will run from 2022-2025 and will involve four intensive meetings, including field trips, where senior and junior faculty, post-docs, and graduate students as well as local stakeholders from around the Arctic will gather to learn and exchange information and develop new insights for Arctic sustainability. Project Lead, Professor Karin Buhmann, explains: “Designed to investigate one of the most pressing issues in the world today, the Academy will focus on pathways to a socially just green transition which will benefit Arctic communities, public and private stakeholders, and the planet as a whole.” The Academy is a partnership between the Copenhagen Business School and the Universities of Helsinki, Tyumen and Northern British Columbia. Professor Paul Bowles, Department of Global & International Studies and School of Economics, sees it as an ideal opportunity for graduate students at UNBC. “The Academy will be hosted by UNBC in May 2023”, he said, “and will offer graduate students a great learning environment with scholars and students from around the world also participating. It will also be an opportunity for UNBC students to tell others about what is happening in our region”.
