UNBC Professor Heather Smith honoured with ELIAS Distinguished Scholar Award

Dr. Heather Smith, professor of Global and International Studies at UNBC, has been named the 2024 recipient of the ELIAS Distinguished Scholar Award, recognizing her contributions to teaching, mentorship and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

For more than three decades, Dr. Heather Smith has shaped the field of international studies through her dedication to teaching and mentorship. Now, the Global and International Studies Professor has been named the 2024 recipient of the ELIAS Distinguished Scholar Award by the International Studies Association. The award highlights Smith’s impact on global and international studies education and her ongoing efforts to enhance student learning experiences.

"I am deeply honoured to receive this award. This recognition reaffirms the importance of fostering curiosity and engagement in global and international studies " says Smith. “Teaching has always been at the heart of my career, and I am grateful for the students and colleagues who have shaped my journey. I look forward to continuing this work.”

Smith, who was recently honoured for her more than 30 years of service at UNBC, is widely recognized for her commitment to innovative teaching and mentorship. Her research focuses on gender and Canadian foreign policy, as well as advancing pedagogical approaches in international studies. 

She has also served in leadership roles such as Director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology at UNBC from 2012–2018, and has contributed extensively to the scholarship of teaching and learning through her research and publications.
