Athletic Director Joins Basketball Canada
“Once-in-a-lifetime” chance to work with Steve Nash and the national team
The UNBC Athletics Director who presided over UNBC’s inaugural season in university athletics will be leaving UNBC next month for an opportunity to be involved with Canada’s national men’s basketball teams. As Manager of High Performance, Jason Kerswill will be coordinating Canada’s men’s national basketball teams.
His last day at UNBC will be April 5.
“I have really enjoyed my time at UNBC and I’ll never forget the athletes or the fans who have made my experience here so special,” says Kerswill, who has been at UNBC since August, 2010. “It really was a great opportunity to move a strong program into Canada West and I couldn’t be more proud of what we have accomplished as a program and as a community in only our first year of competition at that level. I’ve been playing basketball since I was 7 and all of my mentors have been associated with the national team at various times in their careers. Now it’s my turn, and I’m very grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to work with so many passionate basketball leaders including Steve Nash, the General Manager of the national team.”
UNBC Athletics completed its first year at the CIS level with basketball wins at home in late February. UNBC is competing at the CIS level in both men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball.
“As one of the people regularly in the stands at basketball and soccer games, I want to thank Jason for his leadership in bringing UNBC to the CIS,” says UNBC President George Iwama. “He has been engaging all students in Athletics and even established the first "appreciation night" for the faculty and staff who assist our athletes in their studies. I’d like to thank Jason for being such a believer in the power of sport to inspire young and old alike. He will be missed.”
The University will be advertising for a new Athletic Director within the week.
