UNBC Names Interim Men’s Soccer Coach
Prince George, BC – Steve Simonson is the interim head coach of the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves men’s soccer team.
Simonson was most recently the head coach of the Victoria Highlanders FC when the team played in the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League from 2012-2014. He was involved with the Highlanders since the team’s inception in 2007 and also served as the head coach of the club’s reserve team and as the head of player development for the organization.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work with the exceptional group of student athletes at UNBC,” Simonson says. “The Timberwolves program continues to improve each season and this year we will once again field a team that can compete in a strong Canada West conference.”
The men’s team begins its Canada West Universities Athletic Association pre-season schedule on Sunday in Kamloops against Edmonton’s MacEwan University. The regular season begins next month with four road games before home opener on Sept. 26 against the University of the Fraser Valley.
“Steve’s head coaching experience and leadership will help our men’s soccer team continue to develop and excel in Canada West,” says UNBC Director of Athletics and Recreation Loralyn Murdoch. “We needed to find a new interim head coach in a short time frame and I’m delighted to be able to name someone of Steve’s calibre to the position.”
Simonson’s appointment is effective immediately and his term runs until November.
