Local Student Receives Scholarship Valued at More Than $100,000

Cherisse Seaton, a UNBC student pursuing a doctoral degree inPsychology, has received the most valuable scholarship ever awarded toa UNBC student. She has been awarded a Joseph-Armand Bombardierdoctoral scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities ResearchCouncil of Canada (SSHRC) valued at $35,000 per year for three years; atotal value of $105,000.

Ms. Seaton explores adult emotions and resilience manifested inindividual behaviours, ranging from intimacy to forgiveness. She ispursuing her PhD under the supervision of professor Sherry Beaumont.She completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNBC andpreviously attended O’Grady Catholic High School and PGSS.

In addition to announcing the doctoral award to Ms. Seaton, SSHRC has announced other student awards and research funding:

  • Five UNBC students received Joseph-Armand Bombardier master’s levelawards. They are Serena George (studying homeless adolescents), KelseyWiebe (the Fort Simpson fur trade), Sherri Tillotson (cross-culturalsocial interaction), Jacqueline Lytle (poverty in developingcountries), and Chelan Hoffman (emerging regional governance structuresin BC).
  • Two faculty members have received research grants from SSHRC in 2008.Social Work professor Judy Hughes is exploring the interventionstrategies of service providers in dealing with violence against womenin rural and remote communities. Marketing professor Sungchul Choi isstudying the effectiveness of strategies that provide ambiguity andchance in price-reduction claims.
