Classes in the 2007-08 academic year will begin on Tuesday, September4. There are a number of new initiatives beginning this year:

Facilities

The Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre will officially open onSeptember 21 and will provide members of the community and studentswith expanded opportunities for fitness and recreation. Measuring justover 140,000 square feet, the building is the largest on campus andcontains a fieldhouse, gymnasium, indoor track, weight room, exercisestudios, a sport medicine clinic and more.

At the opposite end of the Prince George campus, the new 92,000 squarefoot Teaching and Learning Centre is providing additional classroom,study, and lab space.

Programs
A new Rural Acute Care Nursing Certificate program is providingpracticing nurses with the opportunity to gain certification in ruralnursing. The program was developed following consultation with theMinistry of Health, Northern Health, and more than 200 rural nurses.The program is being delivered largely through the internet to ensureaccess.

A new Bachelor of Fine Arts is being offered in partnership with theEmily Carr Institute of Art and Design. The curriculum is includingcourses in studio, art history, English, and creative writing, as wellas offerings in new media and digital technology.

For the first time starting this fall, The University’s ContinuingStudies program is offering courses that count for credit towardscompleting a degree. Nearly 40 of Continuing Studies’ 200+ offeringsare being offered for credit in such diverse areas as visual arts,music education, Christian Studies, and mental health and addictions.

“From the opening of the Sport Centre to the development of innovativeprogram options, this will be an exciting year for UNBC,” says UNBCPresident Don Cozzetto. “It’s a competitive environment for allpost-secondary institutions so we must respond with programs andservices that will be attractive to students, while working tostrengthen our connection with communities.”

Preliminary enrolment estimates will be known by the end ofSeptember. UNBC attracts nearly 4200 students per year, about 3500 ofwhom attend classes in the fall semester.
