UNBC Offers New Course Options

Continuing Studies to Offer Credit Courses

For the first time starting this fall, UNBC will offer courses throughContinuing Studies that will also count towards completing a degree. Atotal of 39 credit courses will be offered through Continuing Studiesand the first courses will begin on September 5.

The courses are in topics generally not covered through UNBC’s existingacademic offerings. They include courses in visual and performing arts,music, music education for elementary school teachers, languages,natural resources, astronomy, mental health and wellness, andChristianity. Full certificates will be available in Music, MusicEducation, Christian Studies, and Mental Health and Addictions.

The credit courses can be applied as electives toward the completion ofmost UNBC bachelor’s degrees. Credits earned through Continuing Studieswill be held in reserve until the student is admitted into a degreeprogram at UNBC. Students in Continuing Studies are not required tofollow the normal University application process.

“This is something new for UNBC but we see it as an innovative way tomake a greater variety of courses available to people in a moreflexible way,” says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. “The instructors forthese courses are experts in their fields. Students who take thesecourses may just want to take them for personal interest or to gain acertificate, but they also have the opportunity to transfer themtowards completing a degree.”

The new credit courses are part of Continuing Studies’ total roster ofmore than 260 courses. The offerings include English Language trainingfor non-English speakers, professional development opportunities, andcourses for personal interest. Last year, there were nearly 3400registrations in Continuing Studies courses.

Registration in the 2007-08 offerings is now being accepted.

Continuing Studies is one of the departments located in the new Teaching and Learning Centre at the north end of the campus.
