Provincial Recognition

The University of Northern British Columbia women’s basketball teamwill be trying to win its first provincial title this week when theBCCAA playoffs begin in Abbotsford. UNBC’s first game will be Thursday,March 1, against 6th-ranked Camosun College of Victoria.

UNBC is ranked third, after finishing the season with an 11-5 record.

“This has been a good year for us and we really want to finish strong.We feel that we’re very competitive for a provincial championship,”says women’s coach Loralyn Murdoch. “Looking ahead, we are losing onlyone player to graduation this year so I’m hoping that we’ll have one ofthe best teams in BC when we start play next fall in the new NorthernSport Centre.”

Two members of the women’s team have been named BC first-teamall-stars: Jaclyn Nazareno and Laurel Wallace. Both finished in thetop-five in league scoring with Nazareno averaging 20 points per gameand Wallace scoring an average of nearly 15 points per game. Nazarenoalso finished seventh in the league for assists.

Jay Gladish has also been named to a second-team all-star for theprovince. He finished second in league scoring, averaging 20 points pergame. The UNBC men’s team finished the 2006-07 season with a 5-11record.
