Local Accountants Establish Student Awards

A new partnership between the University of Northern BC and theInstitute of Chartered Accountants of BC is leading to an increasednumber of scholarships for students interested in becoming CharteredAccountants.

For the first time, the Chartered Accountants Education Foundation(CAEF) of BC is matching the contributions of individual firms thatwish to establish student awards at UNBC. The partners of Chan FoucherLefebvre Chartered Accountants – which has offices in Prince George,Vanderhoof, and Quesnel – are the first to participate in this program.The company’s contribution of $10,000 is being matched by the CAEF tocreate an endowment that will fund a new annual award for a UNBCAccounting student who is in his/her third or fourth year of studies.

The CAEF has also approved further matching up to a total of $30,000until March 31, 2007, should other local or regional CA firms establishnew awards for students at UNBC.

“To recognize this donation and the matching gift program, we hosted areception recently to bring together local Chartered Accountants, theInstitute of Chartered Accountants of BC, our business faculty, andstudents during an event at my home,” says UNBC President Don Cozzetto.“We hope that other local and regional CA firms take advantage of thismatching program that CAEF has initiated. It provides a wonderfulopportunity for employers to link with top students who may end upbecoming their employees after graduation.”

This year, UNBC is offering nearly 740 scholarships and bursaries worth$1.8 million. The majority of awards have been established by privatedonors.

The Bachelor of Commerce degree is the most popular credential at UNBCand the Accounting major is the single-largest (by enrolment) of anymajor at UNBC.
