UNBC Board Meeting This Weekend in Fort St. John

New Board Members Appointed 

June 19, 2006

TheBoard of Governors for the Universityof Northern British Columbia will bemeeting in Fort St. John this weekend. The publicmeeting will begin at 7:45am on Saturday, June 24, in the Northern GrandQuality Inn. Items on the agenda include approval of the University’s newacademic vision, a presentation on student enrolments in advance of the startof classes in September, and approval of the UNBC three-year service plan. Boardmembers will also elect a Chair and Vice-Chair.

Inaddition to the public meeting, the Board will be hosting a community paneldiscussion and reception on Saturday evening at the North Peace CulturalCentre. The panel discussion will begin at 7:30pm and feature the Mayors ofFort St. John, Fort Nelson, and Dawson Creek as well as the Chair of the Peace River RegionalDistrict, and Linda Chipesia, a UNBC Board member who is also former Chief ofthe Blueberry River First Nation. All panelists will discuss post-secondaryissues and opportunities in the Northeast region.

Themeeting will mark the debut of two new UNBC Board members: Steve Thorlakson and DawnMartin.Mr. Thorlakson is a former Mayor of Fort St. John and currentGeneral Manager of Surerus Pipeline Incorporated. Ms. Martin has had 25years ofeducation experience in the Northwest, serving in a variety of postsfrom a teacher-librarianto school principal, completing her career in education as a Directorof Instruction for School District #82. She has lived in Terrace for 36years.

TheBoard meeting in Fort St. John will be CharlesJago’s last as President of UNBC. He is stepping down this summer after nearlyeleven years as President. Joining the Board meeting in Fort St. Johnwill be President-elect Dr. Don Cozzetto, who will officially replace Dr. Jagoon July 1.

TheBoard of Governors manages and controls the property, revenue, and businessaffairs of the University. It has 15 members, including the President,Chancellor, faculty, staff, students, and regional representatives. The otheruniversity governing body is the Senate, which oversees all academic matters.
