UNBC Board to Meet in Cariboo

TheBoard of Governors for the University of Northern British Columbiawill be visiting the Cariboo region later this month to gather localperspectives on UNBC’s operations and opportunities.

TheBoard meets five times per year and will be holding a regular meeting inQuesnel, on Friday, August 26. The meeting will begin at 10am in the currentCNC/UNBC campus at 488 Maclean Street. The meeting will be held in Room 348.

TheBoard will also be hosting public panel discussions in Quesnel and Williams Lake to provide local citizens withopportunities to get information about UNBC and provide suggestions for how theUniversity could expand its local services and/or research activity:

Topic:Reflections on what has happened in education in Quesnel over the past 10 yearsand the role of a university education in fostering community development.

This year, there were 42 graduates fromQuesnel, more than any other community in northern BC outside of Prince George. The groupincluded a cohort of a dozen Bachelor of Social Work grads. UNBC and CNC arecurrently building a new North Cariboocommunity campus that is scheduled to open later this year.

Topic:Weekend University: Past, Present, and Future

This year, four students graduated withUNBC bachelor’s degree from the Weekend University, a programthat has made university-level courses available on alternate weekends and inthe summer to students from throughout the region. WeekendUniversity is the result of apartnership involving UNBC, the Cariboo Tribal Council, and UCC (now, Thompson Rivers University).UNBC presented an honorary doctoral degree to Mary Alice Danaher this year forher involvement in establishing the program.

TheBoard of Governors is responsible for the operation and business affairs of theUniversity. Its members include students, faculty, staff, and representationfrom throughout northern BC. Local members of the Board are Gary Townsend andAntoine Archie.
