UNBC Hosts Aboriginal Speaker Series

The University of Northern British Columbiaand the Koerner Foundation are partnering to deliver a series of presentationsintended to honour aboriginal women. Two upcoming presentations are featuring anationally renowned educator and a gifted actress.

Tantoo Cardinalwill be speaking on the topic of Abandonment when she presents at UNBC onThursday, March 17th. Cardinal played opposite of fellow Canadian Graham Greene(Kicking Bird) in Dances with Wolves and alongside Brad Pitt and AnthonyHopkins in Legends of the Fall. She has also appeared in a number of Canadiantelevision programs including North of 60 and various theatrical productions.

Jo-ann Archibaldis a nationally recognized leader in aboriginal education. Archibald is fromthe Sto:lo Nation and has been at UBC for two decades as Director of the FirstNations House of Learning and Supervisor of the Native Indian Teacher Educationprogram. She is a theme editor for Canada’s only aboriginal educationjournal and is the Interim Director of the newly established IndigenousEducation Institute of Canada. She will speaking about the perils and promiseof indigenous education in the 21st Century.

Although organized by the University’s Women’s Studiesdegree program, the series would not be possible without the financial supportof the Koerner Foundation. Established in 1955, the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation provides grants to stimulate andinvigorate the cultural and educational communities in British Columbia.
