GOVERNOR GENERAL TO VISIT UNBC

GovernorGeneral Adrienne Clarkson will be visiting the University of NorthernBritish Columbia's Prince George campus on Wednesday, October 6th.

"We're delighted to welcome the Governor General to the University andwe welcome the opportunity to engage with her on the key issues relatedto northern development," says UNBC President Charles Jago.

Her Excellency will be speaking at a public panel discussion onCanada's role as a northern nation and the possibility of thecircumpolar. The presentation will begin at 2:30pm in the WeldwoodTheatre (7-238), which is adjacent to the Bookstore. Other panelistswill include Mayor Colin Kinsley, Canada Research Chair and northernresearcher Greg Halseth of the UNBC Geography program, and Paul Michel,Director of UNBC's First Nations Centre. The discussion will bemoderated by UNBC Anthropology professor Jim MacDonald, who was one ofthe Canadians who accompanied the Governor General during her statevisits to Finland and Iceland in 2003.

Following the panel discussion, the Governor General will accompanyUNBC President Charles Jago on a tour of the Prince George campus,including the new Northern Health Sciences Centre. The tour will beginat 4:30pm.

A leading figure in Canada's cultural life, Madame Clarkson has had adistinguished career in broadcasting, journalism, the arts and publicservice. She has appointed Governor General in 1999.

On this tour of northern BC, Madame Clarkson will also visit Terraceand the Nass Valley, where she will present the insignia of Officer tothe Order of Canada to Nisga'a elder Rod Robinson. Romeo LeBlanc wasthe last Governor General in Prince George, when he visited the Cityand University in May, 1999.
