Nominations Being Sought For Distinguished Public Awards
September 10, 2002 For Immediate Release
The University of Northern British Columbia is seeking nominations for its honorary degree and Friend of UNBC awards - the highest awards the University confers on the general public.
Honorary doctoral degrees recognize distinguished achievement in scholarship, research, teaching, the creative arts, public service, or significant contributions to the life of the University, British Columbia, Canada, or the world.
The award Friend of the University of Northern British Columbia recognizes distinguished achievement in the areas noted above but with a particular emphasis on those who have unselfishly given of themselves to create, promote, or foster the development of UNBC.
Nominations must be sent to the Senate Assistant by Friday, September 27th and include the name and address of the nominee, his/her CV (resume), a list of achievements of the nominee, a brief statement outlining why the nominee should be considered for the honor, and the name/address/phone number of the nominator(s).
The recipients will be recognized at the 2003 Convocation Ceremony on May 23, 2003.
Previous honorary degree recipients have included Haida artist Bill Reid, author Denise Chong, and Lieutenant-Governors David Lam and Iona Campagnolo. Last year, honorary degrees were presented to forester Ike Barber and artist Freda Diesing.
The Friend of UNBC award has been bestowed on founders Bruce Strachan, Tom Steadman, and Murray Sadler, as well as to former Terrace pediatrician Kwadwo Asante, teacher Mary Fallis, and forester Harry Gairns.
