Starting later this month, the University of Northern British Columbia will offer a series of intensive courses throughout northern BC that complement offerings during the regular academic year.

"The regional courses take advantage of the unique learning opportunities that are available in northern BC," says Dennis Macknak, Director of Regional Operations for UNBC.

• A ten-day field camp in the Resource Recreation and Tourism program starts April 25th. The course will be based in Smithers and include a number of visits to recreation and tourism attractions in the Northwest, including K'san, the Nass Valley lava beds, and provincial parks.
  
  
• The Courses on the Coast series is being expanded this year to include five, weeklong courses at the North Pacific Cannery in Prince Rupert and Port Edward. The classes in English, History, Geography, International Studies, and First Nations Studies start on May 8th.
  
  
• A course on Environmental Impact Assessment will be offered in Fort St John from May 1 - 7. The course focuses on the environmental impacts of the oil and gas industry and is being offered as part of UNBC's new Energy degree program based in the Peace River region.
  
  
• An archaeological field school will be offered in conjunction with the Cariboo Tribal Council, and take place north of Williams Lake. The program will run from May 8 - July 21.
  
  
• Four English courses (two in the spring and two in the summer) and a first-year course in First Nations Studies will be offered by Wilp Wilxo-oskwhl Nisga'a (WWN) in the Nass Valley.
  
  
• A first-year Haida language and culture course will be offered over a number of weeks this summer in Skidegate on Haida Gwaii.
  
  
• Two World Wide Web courses will also be offered over the spring and summer, focusing on contemporary politics (Political Science 100) and Canadian government (Political Science 200).
