Message to Employees Regarding CUPE Action
Message to all employees
The Canadian Union of Public Employees has indicated that its membersin northern BC will be participating in a show of support tomorrow forthe BC Teachers’ Federation. Members of CUPE Local 3799 at UNBC areplanning to participate in a walk-out on Tuesday, October 18. Wehave been advised that neither picketing nor leaflet distribution willtake place.
It is the University’s intention that it will be business as usual atUNBC and classes will be offered as scheduled. CUPE is not in a disputewith UNBC and the Union has made it clear in its public communicationsthat its action on Tuesday is not being taken against the University.
Any UNBC employees that do not show up for work on Tuesday will not be paid for the time they are away.
Updates will be posted on the UNBC homepage.

The University will be open as per usual tomorrow (Tuesday, October 18)despite the anticipated withdrawal of services that is being organizedby CUPE. Students have been told to expect to attend classes, writeexams etc.. Committee meetings, regular faculty office hours, and otheractivities that are normally part of a faculty member's role should allcontinue as scheduled.
Some faculty members may, as a matter of conscience, decide to withdrawtheir services from the university tomorrow. If this is the case, afaculty member should send an email or memo to their College Dean, copied to her/his Program Chair, indicating that they will not attendthe university. The Dean will then attempt to have notices placed onclassroom or office doors and that chairs of the affected committeesare informing them of the faculty member's absence from campus. TheDean will also forward a copy of the email to Finance and Payroll sothat appropriate deductions can be made from the faculty member's pay.In keeping with CUPE plans to have their members absent from campus allday, faculty members who withdraw their services in support of CUPE,will have the equivalent of a full day's pay deducted from their nextpay cheque.
Faculty members should also be aware that pre-arranged equipment fromEMS will be accessible by stopping in at the Library Circulation Desk.
If any international students require assistance, they should be directed to Susan McIntyre in Student Services.
Regional faculty members should direct questions specific to their campus to either the Regional Chair or Dennis Macknak.
