Bouchard, Dr. Michel

Biography
Born and raised in a French-speaking community in Northern Alberta in the shadow of the historical fur economy, he has researched ethnicity and nationalism, particularly in Eastern Europe and Russia. He has studied the history of French-speaking populations in Western North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. This past decade, he has studied Métis ethnogenesis and has published a number of books examining historical Métis communities. Dr. Bouchard served as President of the Canadian Anthropology Society and is currently a co-investigator in a SSHRC-funded research projects examining the history and ethnogenesis of the Acadian Métis. I am now beginning a longer research project to study memes and Ukraine.

Michel's research interests include: history of the Canadien and Métis of North America, ethnohistory, sociolinguistics, nation, nationalism, history of nation, identity, French North America, the Komi of Russia, nation in medieval Russia, Métis ethnogenesis, language and community, ethnicity, memes and Ukraine.
