UNBC offers tuition credit to BC Summer Games participants
UNBC is finding meaningful ways to support community efforts to have the Prince George 2022 BC Summer Games make a lasting impression on the young athlete participants, including a tuition credit for those who choose to pursue post-secondary education at the University.
Prince George, B.C. – The BC Summer Games and the University of Northern British Columbia are teaming up to provide an unforgettable experience for the province’s emerging high-performance athletes.
UNBC has come on as a signature sponsor for this significant community event and will provide a number of supports, including for the first time in BC Games’ history, a tuition credit available to participating athletes.
“This is an exciting ‘first’ for the Games,” says 2022 BC Summer Games Host Society President Renee McCloskey. “We are so grateful for the support from UNBC and the opportunity to showcase the beautiful campus in Prince George as part of our Games. It would be wonderful to see these young athletes have their experience at these Games spark their post-secondary journey.”
The BC Summer Games will draw more than 2,300 athletes from 170 communities to compete in Prince George at venues across the city between July 21 and July 24. To celebrate the hard work and dedication of these young athletes, UNBC will offer all Games participants a $2,000 tuition fee credit.
“We know the athletes and their families will have an incredible experience during the 2022 BC Summer Games and we hope this incentive will encourage them to choose UNBC when they’re ready to begin their post-secondary education,” says UNBC President Dr. Geoff Payne. “Elite athletes must work to balance their rigorous training schedules with academics and we hope this financial support will further empower them as they pursue their studies.”
The 2022 BC Summer Games UNBC Tuition Credit is open to all athletes who compete in the Games and will provide tuition credits up to $1,000 in each of their first two consecutive semesters at UNBC. To be eligible, athletes must complete an online prospective student profile by Aug. 31, 2022 and apply for admission to UNBC for any semester up to and including the September 2025 semester.
UNBC is also providing the Games with an in-kind contribution of the use of the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre for evening social events for the athletes, as well as the use of meeting room space and cash sponsorship. In addition, UNBC is offering campus tours for participants and their families.
