Dr. Leroy Little Bear, a member of the Kainai Nation near Lethbridge, Alta., was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in late December by Governor General Julie Payette.

Little Bear, who received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Northern British Columbia in 2016, was recognized “For his advocacy of Indigenous rights and self-governance, and for his work to promote access to education for Indigenous peoples globally.”

Dr. Little Bear, a lawyer, has been instrumental in shaping Indigenous voices and sharing of Aboriginal perspectives. His work has inspired generations of Indigenous students in Canada and around the world.

Little Bear is one of 103 new appointments to the Order of Canada, and one of only 15 new Officers. He will be invited to receive the Order of Canada insignia during a ceremony held at a later date.

The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest awards and dates back to 1967. The Order is presented by the Governor General and “honours people whose service shapes our society; whose innovations ignite our imaginations; and whose compassion unites our communities.”
