MA Development Economics, 2012
What work are you doing now?
Since graduating from UNBC in 2012 I have been fortunate enough to work with Northern Health as part of the Planning & Performance Improvement Team. My role as Outcomes Analyst for Clinical Programs has many responsibilities. Some of which include providing technical and analytical expertise to health care professionals and other internal resources as they improve health care along the continuum of patient/client services. Others are around providing support in the development and implementation of clinical data reporting used to meet the needs of Northern Health’s Clinical Services, including reports needed to satisfy regulatory requirements, research publications, and strategic clinical quality improvement initiatives. Additionally, my role provides consultation and support in the development, analysis, interpretation and management of a variety of complex data sources used to support clinical process improvement.
How do you use the knowledge acquired through the degree in your job/schooling?
My role requires the ability to research, analyze, and problem-solve daily. All skills were obtained through the learning provided while pursuing my Economics degree. My schooling also provided me with a strong foundation in the area of statistical analysis. This knowledge has allowed me to assist in the development of complex predictive models of various areas of the health care system. It also has given me the skills required to translate statistical outputs into meaningful analysis, reports, and recommendations for the senior leadership in Northern Health.
What do you really enjoy about Economics?
I have always been very interested in Econometric Theory. I find it fascinating to learn about how the theory of statistical methods can be applied to model real-world systems.
Why would you recommend the Economics program at UNBC to potential students?
The Economics program at UNBC provides a diverse array of courses that allows students to gain insight into various areas of the real world. The access to and relationships with the professors is above and beyond. This is evident not only in the classroom but also in the many opportunities that were afforded to me in the areas of research and teaching assisting, all of which were crucial to leading me down the path that I am on today. In addition, the Economics program and university as a whole are closely tied to the community of Prince George which provides a great stepping stone for potential career opportunities.
