UNBC prioritizes respect and sympathy during times of loss. The University ensures that the necessary parties involved are consulted, and methods of potential recognition are communicated. Sometimes this takes several days, if not weeks, before a flag is lowered.
While many in the University community may be aware of a sudden death or loss soon after a tragic event, it is never appropriate for the University to make a public statement of any kind, including lowering flags, before the family has been consulted. Some families do not wish to acknowledge their loved ones in this way, and the University community respects and honours their choice.
The Ceremonies and Protocol Office administers the process of lowering the official flags. Announcements to the UNBC community are made through email and notifications on this website.
Please submit a request to lower the flag by using this form. Requests are subject to approval.
