The Board of Governors is responsible for the management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business, and affairs of the University.
Composition:
The fifteen-member Board consists of: The Chancellor, the President and Vice-Chancellor, two elected faculty members, one elected staff member, two students elected by the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Societies, and eight members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
Alumni Appointment Process:
Two of the order-in-council appointments are selected from a small pool of candidates, nominated by UNBC’s Alumni Council. Candidates will need to submit a Candidate Profile Declaration form along with a copy of your resume to unbcboard@unbc.ca. These will be submitted to the Crown Agencies and Board Resourcing Office (CABRO). Once this is submitted, the Alumni Council sends your name in a formal letter to the CABRO. If you are not selected in this round, your expression of interest remains in the provincial candidate pool. In the past, alumni have been appointed to UNBC’s board as general order-in-council members, as well as approached to serve on other boards including the College of New Caledonia.
Volunteer Time:
The University Act requires that the Board meet at least once every three months. The Board has four (4) regularly scheduled annual meetings: March, June, September, and November. These quarterly meetings generally occur on a Thursdays (approx. 3:00 pm – 7:30 pm) with Committee meetings occurring 2 weeks prior to Board via zoom only (in 1.5-2 hour blocks per Committee).
In addition, an annual joint workshop with Senate is scheduled in January or February and there is a brief annual meeting in May, to coincide with Convocation. Most meetings are held in Prince George, but at least one meeting each year occurs in the regions served by UNBC (Terrace, Fort St. John, Quesnel) on a rotational basis.
