Biography

Dr. Kelly joined the Department of Economics at UNBC in September 2020. Prior to starting at UNBC, he completed a PhD and MSc in Food, Agricultural, and Resource Economics at the University of Guelph, as well as a BSc in Economics from the University of Victoria and a Diploma in Business Administration from Camosun College. In addition to his academic experience, Dr. Kelly has worked on projects related to agriculture, economic development, and natural resource management in numerous locations, including Northern British Columbia, Togo, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Originally from British Columbia, Dr. Kelly enjoys spending his free time outdoors and with his family.

Research and Expertise

Dr. Liam D. Kelly is an applied microeconomist with research interests related to institutions, land and natural resources, and economic development. His current research includes a SSHRC funded project analyzing collective property arrangements and sustainable economic development on urban First Nations reserves, an assessment of gender wage inequality in Canadian labour markets, and an investigation into the agricultural and economic implications of the Caracol Industrial Park in Northern Haiti. Previously, Dr. Kelly studied land tenure, gender inequality, and agricultural investment in rural Haiti. He has also studied the legalization of cannabis, focusing on the importance of the black market and the potential economic benefits for both Ontario and the Canadian food processing industry. Finally, in collaboration with representatives from Statistics Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and the University of Guelph, Dr. Kelly analyzed the relationship between farmland values, rental rates, and the interest rate. Dr. Kelly’s approach to research emphasizes outreach and engagement with key stakeholders, a focus on policy implications, and the importance of robust empirical methods. His past experiences include providing advice and support to numerous Indigenous governments, as well as provincial, territorial, and federal ministries/departments, and implementing and evaluating agricultural development projects in Togo, West Africa.
