Born in Radway, Alberta, a hamlet which no longer exists. Early childhood on a homestead near Thorhild, Alberta; then in Sexsmith, Alberta, in the Alberta Peace River district, and Bon Accord, Alberta, NE of Edmonton. Served two years as a CUSO volunteer in Kano, Nigeria, teaching English at what is now Ahmadu Bello University. Worked briefly as a newspaper reporter in NE Alberta and as a parliamentary assistant in the House of Commons, Ottawa. Worked for about twenty years as an editor with the House of Commons Committee Reporting Service. Adjunct professor, Trent University. Worked for one year as a professor within an environmental studies unit at Brock University, Niagara Falls, Ontario. Retired to Smithers, British Columbia, as an amenity migrant. Previously faculty at University of Northern British Columbia as an Associate Professor in the School of Environmental Planning.
