UNBC and AKDN MOU

Welcome to UNBC!  We're happy to have you consider UNBC for your educational journey.  Please find, below, a list of frequently asked questions that may address some of the questions you have.

Prior to Applying

Prior to applying to UNBC, please make sure you have completed the pre-application assessment with your high school counsellor. As part of this assessment, you are required to research your admissibility to UNBC and research fully the steps to acquiring a study permit to Canada through the IRCC. You can find details regarding our undergraduate programs, including program-specific admission requirements, by selecting your program of interest on our webpage here: UNBC Undergraduate Programs. For a detailed list of accepted ways to meet our English Language Proficiency requirement, please see our website here: UNBC International Admissions. This page also includes a link to our International High School Admission Requirements by Country page, where we have outlined specific details for applicants from various countries. If you cannot find details regarding the country relevant to you, please contact futurestudents@unbc.ca.

Using your UNBC Student ID

Once our admission team has completed their initial assessment, they will provide applicants with a UNBC Student ID.  Please provide this ID number in your communication with UNBC. Providing this number eases our processing and response time as we can verify your account with that ID number.

Resume Request

If you have applied to UNBC and have completed high school, our admission team may request a resume. Please review the following document for visual examples (page 9-17). Please include all academic, paid work, and volunteer experience on your resume, including the dates that you have completed and/or plan to complete each component. Please note that our team may ask for details regarding any gap years (between schooling/working) to help us get a full picture of your history.

Non-Competitive Programs Prerequisite

Applicants can be admitted to their program without the courses listed under “High School courses required for degree completion” but will be required to take adjusted first-year schedules to account for missing prerequisites. This could lead to prolonged degree completion timelines. Once admitted to UNBC, students are encouraged to speak with their UNBC Advisor to further plan course selection at UNBC.

IB (International Baccalaureate) Transcripts

If you are completing via IB Curriculum, please plan to have your IB results released to UNBC in your IB portal. Once they are released, our admission team is notified and able to verify your results. If we can verify your results online, there is no need to send official hard copies to UNBC.

Use IB English for English Language Proficiency

If you are completing via IB curriculum, a final grade of 3 or better in IB (International Baccalaureate) English A1 or A2 (higher or subsidiary level). If you have not completed, a predicted English result of 5 is acceptable.

AKU-EB Transcripts

If you are completing via the AKU-EB curriculum, our team can use your final HSSC transcript to verify your results online. Please send a copy of your final result to intl.admissions@unbc.ca. If we can verify your results online, there is no need to send official hard copies to UNBC.

Tuition Deposit

When the UNBC Admissions office has finished reviewing your application and has determined you are admissible to your chosen program, admissions will ask you to pay the admissions deposit. Once the deposit is paid, you will receive the information required to apply for your study permit and your official Letter of Admission. The admissions deposit will be put towards your first semester of tuition at UNBC when you begin your studies.

UNBC Student Account Access

Once a student has accepted their offer of admission from UNBC and paid their admissions deposit, they will gain full access to their UNBC Student Account (and can thus, register for courses).  To make payment to UNBC, please review the UNBC Finance website for instructions.

Finances

Talk to your counsellor or UNBC's International Student Recruitment Officer for more information about tuition and fees.

Students who wish to complete their degree in 4 years will study at least 10 courses (30 credits) per academic year. Students are also required to pay for textbooks and various student fees. Other expenses that you may want to consider are living expenses including housing and food. Costs may vary by program and total semester credit count; below is an estimate based on a 10-course, 30-credit-hour non-competitive undergraduate program.

After you have applied and if admitted to UNBC, if you would like a financial letter outlining the approximate costs of your studies, please email a request to ie@unbc.ca

Letter of Admission and CIC Letters

Once applicants have made their tuition deposit and it is showing on the UNBC Student Account, the UNBC Admission team can release their Letter of Admission and CIC letters. Please allow 5-7 business days for this to happen. If you have not received your letters, please contact intl.admissions@unbc.ca.

Scholarships Opportunities

Once students have accepted their seat and been admitted to UNBC, they are eligible to apply for UNBC awards.  Please see our website for more details here: UNBC Awards and Financial Aid. We recommend that you view UNBC’s detailed Awards Guide here: UNBC Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards .  Some of the awards we offer require additional documents so must be applied for outside of the general application. Please review this guide for any awards that might be relevant to you. We strongly recommend that you speak with your high school counsellor to discuss any awards external to UNBC that they may be aware of.  UNBC recently gave an information session on how to apply for awards that provides detailed assistance on how to navigate the award guide and apply for awards. You can view the webinar recording here: How to Apply for Scholarships.
