The overused, because it’s so often true, expression that we ‘should never waste a good crisis’ has never been more applicable than in the case of the latest trade war launched by Donald Trump against Canada. At the heart of the conflict are notions or resource ownership (and stewardship) and the very notion of national identify and Canada’s sovereignty.

The British Columbian government has made a number of bold policy decisions specifically impacting natural resource development, permitting and financing. The role of academia, the private sector and other orders of government could have profound impacts on what happens next.

Nathan Cullen lives with his family in beautiful Northwestern, BC where he has represented the region at the federal and provincial levels of government. Prior to entering politics he ran a consulting firm focused on strategic planning and conflict resolution.

After graduating university he spent a number of years in international development work in Latin and South America and Africa.

For fifteen years he represented the riding of Skeena Bulkley Valley in Canada’s parliament playing numerous roles as opposition critic on the Environment, Finance, Natural Resources and House Leader for the Official Opposition. He won numerous awards and citations while in office.

After leaving federal politics he was asked to join the John Horgan government in BC and after winning election he served as Minister of Municipal Affairs and as Minister of Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship.
