The United Way in northern B.C.

The United Way B.C. is a non-profit organization with the mission of improving lives, building communities, and being a positive force in the communities UNBC serves, whether in Fort St. John, Prince George, Quesnel, or Terrace. For the last 55 years, United Way has been mobilizing everyday people and organizations to contribute to programs that support communities in the north. Partnering with the United Way is a great way for the UNBC community to be a Good Neighbour while honouring our university’s special mission and deep relationship to the communities of north-central British Columbia.

United Way B.C. initiatives have reached thousands of people and their communities in northern B.C. over the years, offering food security, education assistance, emergency aid, and many other services to those who need them. United Way B.C. hosts community events throughout the region, including the Tree of Lights in Prince George, B.C.

Many of you may already know the United Way through participating in UNBC’s employee payroll donation campaign. However you know the United Way, there’s one important thing you should know: the money raised by all of these activities stays in northern B.C. and helps the United Way B.C. stand with the people, work in the communities, and extend the arm of support to those who are in need.

Given these uncertain times, the demand from community agencies throughout the north is stronger than ever. We’ve set an ambitious target once again this year, seeking to raise $25,861 for our communities in the north. (That’s 2022’s target adjusted for inflation.) With your help, we can do it!

We’re kicking off our 2024-2025 campaign with our first-ever UNBC Good Neighbour Christmas Tree. The natural tree (courtesy of King Pine Contracting) will grace the UNBC Canfor Winter Garden from December 3 to 20. For a small donation, you can help us trim it by “buying” an ornament. Drop by to learn more about the United Way, and drop a donation in the box to make our tree pretty (and meaningful).

How to support the 2024-2025 campaign

  • Drop by the Winter Garden December 3 to 20 every day from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to help us trim the tree.

  • Join our workplace campaign! Download the official United Way pledge form—you can sign up for payroll deductions, donate on a one-time basis (if you aren’t yet a donor), or increase your donation if you are already a donor. New payroll donors who sign up in December will receive a holiday amaryllis as a token of our appreciation.

  • Be part of our Spring Fever campaign in March 2025:
    • Play UNBC online 50/50. You could win up to $5000!
    • Buy big at our annual book sale.
    • Challenge your coworkers at Wine, Spirits, and Beer Survivor—and this year, our new Coffee Survivor—games

Every bit helps! Please share the neighbourly love with our communities through your support of the United Way. Let’s continue to make a difference in the lives of our fellow Northerners!
