This is an NRES (Natural Resources and Environmental Studies) graduate student panel on experiences “in the field,” while doing research.  The invited panel represents different types of researchers and projects across disciplines, including: the study of snow pack and forest stands; hydrology and engineering; biology and ecology; and the human geography of tourism.  The following panelists will share stories and reflections on fieldwork and audience members will be invited to do the same, and to ask questions:

1. Ali Bishop. Field research: Measuring snow depth to validate LiDAR in forest stands. MSc Candidate, Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (Geography). Working with Dr. Joseph Shea (MOSH lab) at UNBC and Dr Bill Floyd (CHRL) at Vancouver Island University;
2. Rahim Jafari. Field research: Using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter in the flume to evaluate 3D velocity fields. PhD Candidate, Natural Resources and Environmental Studies & Quesnel River Research Centre. Working with Dr. Jueyi Sui;
3. Hannah Tench. Field research: Monitoring bird fertility and egg viability. NRES MSc Candidate, Natural Resources and Environmental Studies. Avian Ecology Research Lab, working with Dr. Russ Dawson; and
4. Yihang Zhang. Field research: Understanding Tumbler Ridge visitors and their perceptions of virtual tourism. MA Candidate, Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (Geography).  Working with Dr. Zoë Meletis.

This talk is an annual collaboration between NRESi and Inspiring Women Among Us (www.iwau.ca). It is also co-sponsored by the UNBC Faculty of Environment.  A reception will follow, and a slideshow of “dinosaurs in the field” will run before and after the panel. Whether you love fieldwork, find it daunting, or want to learn more about it, this panel is for you!
