The PIBC Board has appointed the Reconciliation in Planning Committee to review and make recommendations regarding the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Final Report and Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Through our work we realized there was a larger call to action; to decolonize our institutions, practices and approaches. Our work was broadened to encompass a framework for reconciliation for the Planning Profession in BC and the Yukon.
In this talk I will share the beginning of our work towards reconciliation and the lessons I have learned through this process including:
1. Our role in Decolonizing;
2. The benefits of undoing the forces of colonialism;
3. The possibilities were we to co-create a new relationship with First Nation’s;
4. The shifts that are possible if our profession respected First Nation’s rights, culture and traditions.
Ultimately, reconciliation and a new, co-created relationship will benefit all aspects of our society from city planning to resource planning and beyond.
