ABSTRACT: What can studying horses help us understand about modernity? About the ways that core categories of human identity—such as class, gender, and race—have been enmeshed in questions about the impact of globalization and global economic networks, of discourses of science and technology, and of formations of national identity, from the early modern period to the present? These broad questions have been the focus of our research over the past 5 years. In our talk we will discuss some of the key components of our current project, Breed: the Making of Modern Identity. We will also discuss the background and relevance of equine history in relation to human culture that has emerged from our research thus far, and offer some early insights on the interconnections between equines, the thorny history of horse breeds, and human identity.
