Over 300 million seedlings are planted annually in BC. Over 70% of the seed used to grow these seedlings is derived from BC’s forest genetics program. The program consists of research, tree breeding, seed orchards, seed management and associated regulations and standards. This collaborative effort is guided by the Forest Genetics Council of BC (FGC), a multi-stakeholder advisory committee appointed by the Provincial Chief Forester, and its technical advisory committees. Many agencies are involved including the Ministry of Forests Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, the Canadian Forest Service, forest tenure holders, private companies, and universities. This presentation will provide an overview of BC’ forest genetics program and the people working to enhance the conservation, adaptation, health and productivity of BC’s forests.

The Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institite (NRESi) at UNBC hosts a weekly lecture series at the Prince George campus. Anyone from the university of the wider community with interest in the topic area is welcome to attend. Due to Covid19 all talks this semester will be presented remotely. Go to http://www.unbc.ca/nres-institute/colloquium-webcasts to view the presentation.
