Abstract:
This presentation recounts the development of different strands of Polar Geopolitics (cooperative and competitive) which have developed with respect to Antarctic and Arctic regions. In doing so, it traces  the way in which both Polar Regions have historically been  constructed and positioned within imperial, colonial, realist and neo-realist discourses and geopolitical frameworks. It concludes, however, by ‘tipping its hat’ to a more recent, constructivist, critical geopolitics, which seeks to understand how geopolitics have developed as a postcolonial project.
