NRESi Colloquium and Annual Acheivement Awards Presentation
Integrating environmental, community and health concerns to understand the cumulative impacts of resource development across northern BC: A report from the launch of the Cumulative Impacts Research Consortium. Dr. Chris Buse, Project Lead, UNBC, Cumulative Impacts Research Constortium. Northern British Columbia has a rich history of resource development operations including, but not limited to: forestry and mountain pine-beetle recovery, fisheries, mining, renewable energy projects, and a recent surge in oil and gas exploration. To respond to emerging concerns surrounding the interaction between multiple industrial land uses, the Cumulative Impacts Research Consortium (CIRC) was created. The CIRC is a new UNBC initiative that serves as a platform for original research and community engagement on the cumulative impacts of resource development. This presentation will report on key issues that emerged during CIRC’s launch event on October 2-3, 2015. Specifically, the presentation will highlight why this initiative is needed at this point in BC’s history, comment on limitations of existing approaches to cumulative effects assessment, and share CIRC’s emerging strategic research priorities which were surfaced through participatory multi-stakeholder dialogues at the CIRC launch event. The Natural Resources & Environmental Studies Institute (NRESi) at UNBC hosts a weekly lecture series at the Prince George campus. Anyone from the university or wider community with interest in the topic area is welcome to attend. Presentations are also made available to remote participants through Livestream or Blackboard Elluminate. More information will be posted about the presentation as it becomes available. To be followed by the annual NRESi Awards Presentations, starting at 4 pm!
