District #57 Celebrate Student Excellence
September 23, 1999 For Immediate Release
The top grade 12 students in School District #57 will be recognized at an event at the University of Northern British Columbia on Thursday, September 30, 1999.
The students taking part are the district's top academic students. They have been selected for having an "A" average or better in their grade 11 subjects and have completed at least three courses leading to provincial examinations. After arriving at UNBC, the students will have the opportunity to attend university lectures, and participate in other on-campus activities. The day will end with a dinner in the Atrium of the Administration Building, at which the students will be joined by officials from UNBC and School District #57 and representatives of community businesses who provided financial sponsorship for this annual event.
"A unique part of this event will occur when the students receive a provisional offer of admission to UNBC along with a single course tuition waiver," says Alex Reed, Associate Vice-President for Student Services and University Registrar. "The students participating in the event can consider themselves admitted to UNBC if they maintain their high level of academic achievement in grade 12. They will also have the tuition fee for one course waived."This is the second event to recognize student excellence. The initiative for the event came from local school trustees last year. "Celebrating student success and encouraging students to consider post-secondary learning opportunities is very important," said School Board Chair Shirley Bond. "We are excited about working together with UNBC and our community to recognize student achievement."
Students from Prince George, Mackenzie, Valemount and McBride will be attending the event.
