UNBC Home-Openers This Weekend

October 31, 2007
History will be made for the UNBC Athletics program this weekend when the Northern Timberwolves basketball teams will play their first-ever league games in the new Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.

“This is a dream come true for our program, the players, and the many residents of the region who have supported our teams for so long,” says UNBC Athletics and Recreation Coordinator, Len McNamara. “The players are excited to play their first games in this beautiful new building, in front of hopefully the biggest home crowd in the program’s history.”

The games will be played on Friday, November 2 and Saturday, November 3. On both days, the women’s game will begin at 6pm, with the men to follow at 8pm. UNBC will be playing against Kwantlen University College on Friday and Langara College on Saturday. Langara is last year’s BC women’s champion.

A number of special events will be held in conjunction with the weekend games:
•    Brownridge & Company Insurance and Western Industrial Contractors will be providing the chance for one fan to win $10,000 if he/she makes a basket from half-court. This will take place during half-time in the men’s game.
•    Entertainers will include dancers from Judy Russell’s Enchainement Dance Centre, the band from DP Todd Secondary, and the Timberwolves mascot.
•    The corporate sponsor for the Friday games will be Brownridge and Company Insurance. BMO Bank of Montreal will be the sponsor of Saturday’s games.
•    While the full concession remains under construction, interim food/beverage service during the games will include popcorn, hot and cold drinks, chocolate bars and chips, hot dogs, and sandwiches.

Tickets for the games are available at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre in advance or at the games. Ticket prices are as follows: adults $5, seniors/students $3, children $2. The gymnasium can accommodate up to 2,000 spectators.

The Northern Timberwolves basketball teams include an Academic All-Canadian, and Athletic All-Canadian, and a BC Second-Team All-Star. Full information about the teams and the roster of players is available online: www.unbc.ca/athletics.
