June 7, 2007
The most successful coach in the history of Canadian university basketball will be joining the UNBC basketball program this coming season to assist coaches Loralyn Murdoch and Zane Robison.

Ken Shields was the University of Victoria Men's Basketball Coach from 1976-89, during which time he won seven straight National Championships and four "CIS Coach of the Year" awards. He is also a former national team program director and head coach. He is a member of the Order of Canada and of the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame.  Mr. Shields currently travels to Japan as a basketball consultant for Japanese professional teams.

“Attracting a coach of Mr. Shields’ experience speaks volumes about our commitment to enhancing UNBC’s athletics program. This is a milestone day for UNBC and our program,” says Len McNamara, Coordinator of UNBC Athletics. “His knowledge and commitment to success will make our program stronger. Our goal is to be the best and now we have the best working with our coaches and players.”

Mr. Shields will travel to Prince George early in the season to work with the players and coaches. He will also attend a number of regular-season games, both in the new Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre and when the teams are on the road.

The first games of the 2007-08 basketball season will be November 2/3 and UNBC will be hosting the provincial collegiate basketball championship from February 27 – March 1, 2008. The grand opening of the Northern Sport Centre will be held on September 21.
