The University of Northern British Columbia women’s basketball team will be trying to win its first provincial title this week when the BCCAA playoffs begin in Abbotsford. UNBC’s first game will be Thursday, March 1, against 6th-ranked Camosun College of Victoria.

UNBC is ranked third, after finishing the season with an 11-5 record.

“This has been a good year for us and we really want to finish strong. We feel that we’re very competitive for a provincial championship,” says women’s coach Loralyn Murdoch. “Looking ahead, we are losing only one player to graduation this year so I’m hoping that we’ll have one of the best teams in BC when we start play next fall in the new Northern Sport Centre.”

Two members of the women’s team have been named BC first-team all-stars: Jaclyn Nazareno and Laurel Wallace. Both finished in the top-five in league scoring with Nazareno averaging 20 points per game and Wallace scoring an average of nearly 15 points per game. Nazareno also finished seventh in the league for assists.

Jay Gladish has also been named to a second-team all-star for the province. He finished second in league scoring, averaging 20 points per game. The UNBC men’s team finished the 2006-07 season with a 5-11 record.
