The University of Northern British Columbia will be hosting a number of public events to commemorate BC Archives Week. The events will help increase awareness of local history and promote the work of the Northern BC Archives at UNBC.

Capturing Community Memories: The Writing of Local History
This book panel discussion will feature local historians Jack Boudreau, Valerie Giles, Councillor Shirley Gratton, UNBC History prof Mary-Ellen Kelm, and Eldon Lee.

Official Opening of the UNBC Archives
This event will be held in the Atrium of the Administration Building and include archival displays and recognition of the Archive's inaugural donors. In addition, a ribbon-cutting will be held in the area of the UNBC Library currently occupied by the Archive.

The UNBC Archive currently holds collections on northern flora, an
early-1900s ledger from a Cariboo gold mine, the entire historical record
of the Cassiar mining community, and a genealogical history of the Carrier
people.
The University is currently attempting to create a $1.5 million endowment
for the ongoing operation of the Archive. The interest generated by
the endowment could support a number of annual projects, including outreach
with First Nations communities, offering courses on cataloging local
history, a travelling exhibit on northern BC artifacts, and an interactive
website.
