The School of Planning and Sustainability, housed in the Faculty of Environment, offers British Columbia’s oldest accredited undergraduate degree in planning. Our course offerings cover all areas of planning and students can major in First Nations Planning, Natural Resources Planning, or Northern Rural and Community Planning. We pride ourselves on our innovative approach to planning education, small class sizes, and collegial spirit.
Our program responds to the needs of communities and landscapes throughout Canada, with a particular focus on planning in and for the North. Our program shares close ties with professional practice, through engaged and active membership with the Planning Institute of British Columbia and Canadian Institute of Planners, and through our innovative Planner in Residence program. Through an immersive educational experience, we prepare students to become the changemakers of tomorrow! Students learn to work with community members, and within natural systems, and our program prepares them to address some of society’s most pressing challenges including climate change, accessibility, equity and inclusion, reconciliation and more! Our alum are successful in finding meaningful work throughout the world.
As a research-intensive university, our faculty are leaders in their fields, with active research programs in the areas of housing, urban sprawl, urban design, accessibility, community participation, healthy communities, environmental stewardship, First Nations planning and more. Our faculty also supervise graduate students through the NRES program.
